18 Dewey Avenue

18 Dewey Avenue, Provincetown (2012), by David W. Dunlap.Sunrise Cottage

History — and our disinclination to think of ourselves as imperialists — seem to have left Adm. George Dewey behind. But there was a time in 1898 and 1899, after his triumph over the Spanish fleet in the Battle of Manila Bay, when Dewey was wildly acclaimed and widely imagined to be of presidential timber. Dewey Avenue in Beach Point may turn out to have been the accolade most suited to his diminishing stature in the popular imagination: a two-block stretch of unpaved road. Here at No. 18 is a little gem that is anything but warlike. In the front yard of Sunrise, owned since 1999 by Patricia P. Doyle (b 1950), is a child-sized gingerbread cottage that might make anyone want to play house. • Assessor’s Online Database ¶ Posted 2012-12-13
