There is no missing or mistaking Creek Cottage, at least not in its current livery, a color quite close to what Benjamin Moore calls “Northern Lights.” The Almeida family once lived here. Albert Almeida (±1887-1964) was a shoemaker from São Miguel in the Azores. His first [?] wife, Julia (Gomes) Almeida (±1893-1952), was also from the Azores. Lisa Coleman, a great-granddaughter of Viola Cook, who lived on the abutting property at 62 Creek Road, said her mother told her that Almeida was a very kind man.

“She loved going over there at Christmas time because they had a beautiful manger set that was hand-carved (I think she said it was from Portugal) and it took up the whole room,” Coleman told me in 2013. • Assessor’s Online Database, Unit 1 • Assessor’s Online Database, Unit 2 ¶ Updated 2013-01-04

  1. This is not the house of Viola Cook, my great-grandmother.

Viola’s husband was married prior and had three children by his first wife, who died in childbirth. After Viola and Manuel married, they had nine children together. My grandmother, Ruth O’Donnell, was the “baby.” Their house is just around the corner, on Creek Road (off Franklin). My grandmother was brought up in the house on 62 Creek Road.

Her oldest sister, Angie Metallo (and her husband, Jimmy Metallo), lived in the Creek Road house when I was growing up. Then her daughter Ruthie lived there for a little while. It was then sold (not sure to whom, but they did a great job fixing it up).

After my grandmother married Richard O’Donnell, they lived at 5 Atlantic Avenue and brought up their three daughters there. My grandmother passed away last year, just a couple of weeks shy of her 98th birthday and the 5 Atlantic Avenue house was sold soon after.

  2. Thanks to Ms. Coleman’s note, I have moved her great-grandmother to the abutting property, 62 Creek Road, which was formerly known as 38 Franklin Street.
