Dominic S. “Dom” Avila (±1900-1959), a first-generation Provincetown native of Azorean parentage, was still hard at work as a carpenter as he neared his 60th year. Up on the roof of 31 Pearl Street on 7 August 1959, he apparently tried to jump from one staging area to another at a higher level. He slipped and fell, striking his head on an ash barrel as he tumbled to the ground.
He survived a little more than a month but finally succumbed at Mass General on 12 September. His wife, Almeida (Taves) Avila (b 1910), lived here into the 1990s. After owning this property more than 60 years, the Avilas sold it in 1995 to Mark Emerson Collins. • Assessor’s Online Database ¶ Posted 2012-12-28
