Shank Painter Road
This “Painter” has nothing to do with artwork. It is, instead, a nautical term referring to a length of chain that helps bear the weight of an anchor when the anchor is hauled up and made fast to a ship’s side. More history»
Snail Road
Snail Road, now as then, is the most important thoroughfare into the dunes. On foot, you can trace it from a wide asphalt road with a large condo complex on one side and a midcentury motel on the other to a point where it is only a well-trod path through the sand. Its secondary name — Eugene O’Neill Way — pays homage to the most famous of the dune dwellers. ¶ Posted 2013-10-06
